Guwahati: After handily defeating the dreaded COVID-19 disease that has so far claimed over 8 lakh lives across the world, Assam's Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta today returned to work and was welcomed back with raucous applause.

The DGP, along with some pictures, shared the poignant story of his fight against the virus that confronted the world community with its biggest challenges in recent memory.

"I was confirmed on 10 August that I was infected with Covid-19 After staying at home on the first day, I was admitted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital the next day," Mahanta wrote in his message.

The day he tested positive, the DGP had written, "Always trying to move forward with positive thoughts and positive views. After becoming Covid-19 positive, I am thinking that the body has been developed to defeat the coronavirus, I can wage a more powerful fight against corona as a corona fighter.′′

Today, days after overcoming the respiratory disease, he reflected, "With your love, blessings, wishes, prayers, God's grace and care of the doctor, I am now completely healthy and more powerful than ever before, I am ready to fight against Corona."

Mahanta also thanked his colleagues for extending a warm welcome to him after his triumph over the disease. "The enthusiasm that my colleagues greeted me after a few days of returning to the office has been a source of courage and inspiration for me," Mahanta said.

Assam's Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta finally overcame the dreaded COVID-19 virus after his swab tested negative on Sunday, August 31.

Tweeting about this development, ADGP ( Law and Order) G P Singh wrote, "DGP Assam @DGPAssamPolice, IGP L&O, SP @Dhubri_Police, SP @TinsukiaPolice DCP Crime Guwahati have turned negative from Covid-19. Great news for all of us. We thank the health officials who made this possible."

Amid the surge in coronavirus cases in Assam, the state's top police official had contracted the viral disease on August 10. He was later shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for his treatment.
