Assam DGP States, "Victor Das Couldn't Give Us Any Concrete Evidence"

GUWAHATI: Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta on Saturday stated that Victor Das couldn't provide viable information on the cash demands for recruitment into Grade III and IV posts matter and has misinterpreted the facts.

DGP Mahanta told reporters, "Victor couldn't give us any concrete evidence on the matter at hand. He has misinterpreted the whole incident."

On Friday night, Victor Das was arrested for spreading false rumours over an alleged scam on appointments to the Grade III and IV posts. Candidates for the posts are being selected through a direct recruitment examination that was held across Assam on August 21 and 28.

Das had alleged that sums of Rs 3 to 6 lakhs are being demanded from the candidates.

Guwahati Police tweeted, "One Victor Das has been arrested for spreading false rumours and indulging in a conspiracy to foment discord between various sections of society over selection to Government posts."

However, when he was interrogated by the police, Das could not furnish any relevant proof regarding the information that he had circulated over social media.

Also, in a video circulated on social media, Das had claimed that "a huge lobby is running for backdoor appointment the recently held ADRE exams where people are demanding money from 3 lakhs to 8 lakhs depending on the post." He also claimed that "a few ex- MLA" are involved.

Tagging Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and Special DGP GP Singh on Twitter, Victor had written, "Respected Sir, a huge lobby is running for the backdoor appointment of the recently held ADRE exams where people are demanding money from 3 lakhs to 8 lakhs depending on the post, also a few ex-MLA is involved. Please help."

Victor Das had also stated that he had the phone numbers of candidates who had been approached for money in lieu of jobs in the Grade III and IV posts of the state government, and that he would turn over the information to concerned agencies for taking action on the matter.
