Assam: Dhansiri Villagers Plant 1 Lakh Saplings To Protect Nature

GUWAHATI: The rural people of Dhansiri in upper Assam's Golaghat district created a record by planting 1 lakh saplings to protect the nature.

The record was marked on the occasion of World Environment day where villagers from that area along with the officials of forest department and the district admininistration were present.

The saplings were planted on 40 hectares of land on Saturday at the Tengapani Dui Noi Mukh area that comes under Sarupathar assembly constituency's district.

The Sarupathar MLA, Biswajit Phukan said trees were planted in an area about 500 acres of land that was present and the Nambor forest would be extended till that area. He said people would also be compensated for those who gave up their lands for the plantation drive.

He remarked that the said planted area used to be a forest earlier that was taken over by the villagers.

He said those people who once upon a time encroached upon the forest had now decided to re- work on it.

In the upcoming years, the local people of Dhansiri sub- division plans to plant 15 lakh such saplings and each family is said to have plant a minimum of 10 saplings.
