DHUBRI: In a historic milestone, Dhubri Medical College and Hospital successfully conducted its first-ever spinal surgery, marking a major breakthrough in the institution’s medical capabilities.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the hospital, highlighting the state’s advancements in specialized healthcare and encouraging citizens to opt government medical colleges for treatment.

Taking to social media platform X,CM Sarma underscored the availability of expert doctors and advanced medical facilities in Assam’s public hospitals, assuring that major procedures are covered under government schemes, thereby eliminating financial burdens for patients.

According to Dr. Ankumoni Saikia, Principal of Dhubri Medical College, the surgery was conducted on a 16-year-old girl from Dhubri district, who was diagnosed with a spinal tumor that led to a post-traumatic fracture and neurological deficits.

A team of skilled surgeons successfully removed the tumor, performed decompression, and fixed a spinal screw to stabilize her condition. The procedure was conducted under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, ensuring zero cost for the patient.

Dr. Saikia also disclosed that the hospital is now equipped to perform other complex surgeries, including total knee replacements and hip replacements, further solidifying its role in providing advanced medical care to the region. This milestone reinforces the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding specialized treatment options in Assam’s medical colleges.
