GUWAHATI: Lok Sabha MP Dilip Saikia has officially assumed the role of president of the BJP's Assam unit, succeeding Bhabesh Kalita. The announcement of his unopposed appointment was made at 12:30 pm on Friday.

Saikia was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 2019 and was subsequently re-elected from the Darrang-Udalguri constituency in 2024.

Interestingly, he was the sole candidate that submitted his nomination for the state president role by Thursday evening, which is before the deadline of 7 PM.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed Saikia in his new role and praised him for his commitment and a disciplined approach as a "Karyakarta" in the organization. Even Saikia's work as a "Swayamsevak," party worker, and Member of Parliament drew great appreciation from Sarma, who was most confident that the Assam BJP would cross many new milestones under his leadership.

Currently serving as the national general secretary of the BJP, Saikia has previously held roles in the student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, affiliated to the RSS. Bhabesh Kalita, outgoing state unit chief, was hopeful that Saikia would prove an effective leader for the party and referred to his experience within the organization.

Saikia will first lead the party in the panchayat elections, which are likely to be held in April, and then prepare for the assembly elections scheduled for next year.
