

NAGAON: The monthly meeting of the district-level Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) Committee for the month of September was held on Friday at the conference hall of the District Commissioner’s office, Nagaon here.
The meeting was chaired by Additional District Commissioner Lakshya Jyoti Das and the ADC immediately delved into the review of the works undertaken till date in connection with the decisions taken in the last NCORD meeting. He enquired about the progress and activities undertaken by the Circle Level Committee/Task Force with regards to tackling the issue of drug menace in the district.
He also asked the Social Welfare department to include messages against drug abuse in the many ongoing programmes such as Poshan Month organized under their department. Representative from the police administration in the meeting informed that within the last week, over 60 drug peddlers were arrested, 36 cases registered while 686.33 grams of heroin, 10.704 kilograms of cannabis and 160 cough syrup bottles were seized in the district.
The circle officers present in the meeting updated the data on various awareness meeting and rallies they organized in their respective circles. The Municipal Boards under Nagaon district were also instructed to create Ward-level Committees in tackling drug abuse and laid stress on more initiatives to be planned out for rural areas. The suggestion of involving college-level students for awareness creation was also discussed in the meeting such as street play performance and documentary screenings on drug abuse. The topic of making the drug rehab centres women and child-friendly was also tabled and discussed in the meeting.
BDOs, representatives from the health department and ASACS, representatives from NYK, NGOs, civil society and other stakeholders concerned and officials were present in the meeting.
