Assam Doctors Claims Courtesy After Pig's Heart Transplant In The US

NEW DELHI: The news of transplanting the heart of a pig in a human body at the Maryland Hospital in the United States has been widely circulated on social media for the last few days.

On Tuesday 11 January a team of surgeons in the US successfully transplanted a genetically modified pig's heart in one of the patients.

It is something interesting that the northeastern state of India, Assam has a very significant role in the victorious move by US doctors and in undergoing such a big surgery operation in fact Assam Doctors claims that actual courtesy goes to them.

Dr. Dhani Ram Barua from Assam claimed that the American doctors are the successors of the medical invention that he invented in the year 1997. Dr. Barua hails from Hong Kong, China.

The doctor had performed the surgery of transplanting organs from one species to another named as Xenotransplantation. He at that time had successfully transplanted the heart and lungs of a pig into a 32-year-old man. The operation was done in his clinic located in the Sonapur area of Guwahati, Assam.

He said the man did not survive as he later died after suffering from various internal infections caused throughout the surgery.

The Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) government of Assam at that time ordered an investigation on the matter and also issued arrest warrants against Dr. Dhani Ram Baruah and his friend and colleague Dr. Jonathan Ho Kei-Shing who was also a surgeon.

Later both the doctors were found guilty of such an immoral act and potential homicide that fall under the Act of Transplantation of Human Organs, 1994. The surgeons were punished with 40 days of imprisonment.

A student of Dr. Dhani Ram Barua named Dalimi Baruah speaking on the matter said that there is nothing to get shocked with the US pig's heart transplant news and it is nothing new. The experiment was earlier carried out by her mentor Dr. Dhani Ram Baruah back in 1997 and the real courtesy goes to him.

Dalimi stated that Dr. Baruah lost his ability to speak frequently after undergoing a tracheostomy and brain surgery. But the students can understand whatever he says and Dalimi mentioned that the surgeon the American doctors have used the same technique that he invented in 1997.

Earlier he had repeatedly told that it is possible of transplanting a pig's heart in a human but nobody believed him and his hospital was burnt when he had returned back from jail.

The student Dalimi said that her mentor Dr. Baruah has not received the respect that he deserved as a surgeon.
