Assam: Doloo Tea Estate withdraws lockout notice

Silchar: Doloo Tea Estate has withdrawn the lockout notice. On Friday, a tripartite meeting was held at the office of Assistant Labour Commissioner where the tea estate authority as well as two labour unions participated. After being assured that the labourers would report to their respective duties on time, Supriyo Sikdar, manager of Doloo Tea Estate agreed to lift the lockout. The management pasted the lockout notice on June 27 midnight. The notice stated that the production was badly hit as the labourers did not report to work in time.

The declaration of lockout at time the entire valley was facing the worst ever flood created much controversy. Doloo was in news for last couple of months as the labourers protested the move to set up a greenfield airport at two of its divisions. District administration had recently uprooted lakhs of tea bushes with excavators to acquire 2500 bighas of land for the proposed airport.

Labourers alleged that they were asked to work at a place which was three kilometres away from their residence and hence they could not report to work in time.

On Friday, the tripartite meeting however yielded a positive result as the management agreed to lift the lockout notice. Barak Cha Shramik Union was represented by its general secretary Ajit Singh and assistant general secretary Rajdeep Goala while Supriyo Bhattacharya of CITU and Soumitra Nath of BMS participated in the meeting.
