SIVASAGAR: A drought-like situation has gripped parts of Sivasagar district, with several villages under the Sivasagar Revenue Circle reporting crop failure due to severe moisture deficit. According to an assessment conducted by the District Agriculture Department, inadequate rainfall during the current monsoon season has significantly impacted paddy cultivation in the region.

The most affected areas fall under the Gaurisagar Block and Konwarpur ADO Circle, including villages such as Dighal Dorioli, Dimoumukh Gaon, Ligiribari NC, Ajarguri, Boloma Miri, Lepai and Boloma Koiborta. These areas have recorded “deficit” levels on the Moisture Adequacy Index (MAI), hindering both seedling and transplanted paddy growth.

In Dighal Dorioli alone, 2 hectares of transplanted paddy have been damaged. Similar losses are observed in other villages, with the total uncultivated land ranging from 4 to 39 hectares per village. The number of farm families affected is alarming, with over 100 families in Dimoumukh Gaon and 112 in Ligiribari NC reportedly impacted.

As of August 1, a total of 40,545 hectares of agricultural land has been sown across the district. However, further expansion of cultivation remains uncertain due to prevailing dry conditions. According to sources, the district administration is also monitoring the situation closely and also making all possible efforts to mitigate the impact of the ongoing crisis.

Farmers, meanwhile, continue to hope for timely rain, as the delay could further threaten food security and livelihoods in the region.
