Dibrugarh: A 40-year-old man was squashed to death by an elephant at Sessa Nagaon village in the Dibrugarh district of Assam on April 12.

Megnath Gowala is the name of the deceased and he hails from Lezai area.

A forest official said that they received an information about a man being stamped to death by an elephant at Sessa Nagaon village. The official added that they found the man being crushed to death by wild elephants that entered the area from nearby Dehing-Medla reserve forest.

The incident unraveled when the man went out to graze his cattle early in the morning and suddenly, he came across a wild elephant. Thereafter, the elephant chased him and trampled him to death. The police came to the site of the incident and took his body for post-mortem.

Lakhi Nath, a local resident, said that a herd of elephants came out of the Dehing-Medla forest reserve on the night of April 11 in search of food and wreaked havoc in their village. 

He also went on to express the grief of the villagers by saying that the elephant herd destroys their crop every year as a result of which they have to go through tough times.

Meanwhile, Parimal Suklabaidya, the environment and forest minister of Assam, informed that almost 924 people got killed as a result of man-elephant conflict in the state in the last 10 years.

In a written reply, the minister also went on to inform that as many as 772 people were injured in such conflicts during the same period.
