Assam: Enquiry Ordered By GMCH Superintendent Regarding Deven Dutta’s Death

GUWAHATI: Following the rise of allegations that lack of adequate blood supply being the cause of death of noted educationalist Deven Dutta, an enquiry has been initiated regarding the same. The office of the principal cum superintendent of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital gave the order to conduct this enquiry.

According to the order, the superintendent has ordered an investigation of the media reports which mentioned the delay in the supply of blood to the patient from the blood bank, which led to his death on Friday. The order also mentioned that a three-member committee will look into the matter and suggest remedial measures if necessary. Dr Ajanta Sarma, Professor and Head of the Microbiology Department of GMCH will be chairman of this committee while Dr Usha Sarma, Professor of Pathology and Dr Ujjal Kr Sarma, Deputy Superintendent of the college will serve as members in the same.

Noted educationalist and activist Deven Dutta passed away in the medical facility where he was admited on August 11. He was 81 years old at the time of death. With the formation of this committee, it remains to see if the allegations that came to light in one of the premier medical institutions of the entire northeastern region are actually true.

He was suffering from several medical conditions including cardiac, renal and pulmonary problems and was admitted to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital on August 11 and was under care since then. It was informed that Deven Dutta passed away at around 12:10 AM on Friday.

He was born in the Nazira locality of Sivasagar on April 5, 1944. He completed his post-graduation in English in 1965 and later on became a professor of the subject at the prestigious Cotton College of Guwahati. Later on, he was given the position of the Vice Principal of the same institution in 2001.
