GUWAHATI: In a major breakthrough, the West Guwahati Police Department team from Garchuk Police Station uncovered a counterfeit currency racket in Lalungaon. During the operation, 600 fake Rs. 500 notes with a face value of Rs. 3 lakh were seized.

Two individuals, identified as Rejaul Islam (24) and Rajibul Islam (33), were apprehended in connection with the racket. Dubbed as 'creative financiers,' the duo is suspected to have been operating the illegal activity for some time.

Authorities have initiated legal proceedings, and further investigations are underway to identify other links in the counterfeit network.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, two individuals, identified as Gobinda Barman and Chandan Ray, were arrested in Dhubri, Assam, on Tuesday night for possessing a large quantity of counterfeit Indian currency notes. Both suspects were residents of Matiapara village in Kokrajhar district.

The arrests had been made in Haripur, under the jurisdiction of Tamarhat Police Station. Authorities had recovered two fake currency notes, 1,500 sheets of blank paper, and chemicals believed to have been used for producing counterfeit money. A scooter that was reportedly used in their operations had also been confiscated.

The seized items had been secured for further investigation as law enforcement worked to uncover the larger counterfeit currency network and identify other individuals who might have been involved in the operation.
