Assam: Farmer Killed After Getting Attacked By Buffalo Near Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

GUWAHATI: In a fatal incident, a farmer tragically lost his life after getting attacked by a wild buffalo in the 1 No. Dhamkhunda (Kordia) area under the Pragjyotishpur police station on Monday, December 23.

Informing about the harrowing ordeal, Forest Range Officer Pranjal Baruah revealed that the buffalo, which had strolled out of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, aggressively charged at the victim who had gone out to his paddy field.

The deceased has been identified as Ruplal Malo, a 31-year-old farmer. The collision inflicted severe injuries to the farmer who was rushed to Sonapur hospital for immediate medical assistance.

Unfortunately, Malo could not manage to survive the fatal attack as doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.  

The Forest Range Officer also disclosed that the buffalo returned to the sanctuary following the attack. Baruah further informed that this particular animal is involved in several recent human-animal conflict incidents.

Shortly after the incident, a forest team led by the Range Officer went to the hospital to gather details. Meanwhile, awareness campaigns were conducted by another team to warn locals about the dangers of wildlife near the sanctuary's boundary.

The forest, police, and public administration officials are working in tandem to provide financial assistance to the family of the victim and deliberate on strategies to prevent untoward incident of this sort.

It is worth mentioning that the human-animal conflicts in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam's Morigaon district has been increasing of late.
