BARPETA: Locals at the weekly markets in Barpeta have accused dishonest vendors of engaging in a paddy "seed scam" in which they sell rice seeds at exorbitant costs. Reports from local sources claim that paddy seed packets, which should be sold for a maximum retail price (MRP) of Rs 500, are instead fetching prices of Rs. 700 to Rs. 800.

A network of dishonest merchants is accused of taking advantage of both farmers and consumers in Sarthabari's Bhaktordoba and Niligaw areas, where the fraud seems to be functioning through seed suppliers. Local political groups are furious about the problem and have urged tougher regulations to stop the people from being exploited in the future, as well as prompt action against the offenders.

Meanwhile, the government-run Muga Seed Farm in Khanapara, Guwahati, has provided a ray of hope in the face of a difficult situation. According to demonstrator Sujit Barman, the farm has successfully raised 500 grammes of Muga eggs on its grounds this Katiya season. It is anticipated that the farm will yield about 20,000 muga cocoons based on the disease-free Muga cocoons' robust growth and active development.

Muga cultivation has been severely impacted by abrupt climate fluctuations and rising temperatures, especially during the Ahar (June-July), Bhada (August-September), and Ahin (September-October) seasons.

This year, the supply chain for cocoons required for commercial Muga farming during the Kati (October–November) season has been adversely affected by severe temperature spikes. Because of this, it has been difficult for many Muga farmers to get enough Muga cocoons for Katiya cultivation.
