SRIBHUMI: A female elephant passed away due to old age at the Lalkhira tea estate in Patharkandi in Assam's Sribhumi district on Sunday. The elephant, which had been suffering from health issues related to its advanced age for several months, was found dead near a local temple.
Upon receiving reports on the condition of the elephant, Assistant Conservator of Forests Samsuddin Laskar and his team reached the spot to take away the dead body. Post-mortem examination was conducted on Monday, and after that the elephant was given a traditional funeral under the control of forest officers.
The local residents were concerned about the fact that despite their warnings to the forest department about the elephant's illness for the last few months, proper care was not taken which resulted in the death of the elephant. Community elders say the dead elephant belonged to a herd of 13 that had roamed the Patharkandi area, especially on the India-Bangladesh border, for the last thirty to forty years. Tragically, ten female elephants from this herd had died in the past from health complications and accidents, and now only two survived after this incident.
Traditionally, the herd roamed the forest but has been increasingly invading residential areas in search of food. Residents said the recent invasions have inflicted significant destruction to homes and agricultural fields in Sribhumi district.
