KHARUPETIA: Land and property-related conflicts led to serious fights, which claimed the lives of two people in the Darrang district of Assam. Many more people were injured in this fight and shifted to a hospital on Tuesday.

According to local reports, the incident took place in the Janata Nagar locality of Kharupetia. The incident started with a large group of people forcefully trying to lay their claims on a plot of land belonging to the sons of one late Sinaruddin. There is a motor garage in the plot of land on which the gang laid their claims.

The attackers first took down the close-circuit cameras installed at the location and proceeded to attack the people with sticks and local machetes or daos. They wrecked havoc in the locality and soon many people were injured. The incident led to the death of one named Jaher alias Ghare and his sister-in-law Mafia Khatoon on the spot. Several people including Jamaluddin, Sahijal, Imram, Samsuddin, Safiur, Atikul and Sabar Ali suffered serious injuries and were shifted to a hospital for better medical care.

The incident triggered massive sensation in the location and police had to be called to control the situation. A team under the Superintend of Police for Darrang, Prakash Sonowal, arrived at the situation and controlled the situation. He also announced that an investigation has been initiated regarding the incident.

Previously, the Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association demanded a high level inquiry against illegal land grabbing of poor tea garden workers' land. Addressing a press conference at Banipur , Dibrugarh ATTSA secretary Lakhindra Kurmi said, "We demand a high level inquiry against the forceful land grabbing of Krishna Kurmi's land by land mafia." "The land mafia forcefully grabbed 6 bigha land of Krishna Kurmi at Jiliguri Gaon under Lahowal constituency of Dibrugarh. In 2012, the land mafia threatened Krishna Kurmi and took his signature in a piece of paper and on March 17, 2014, they made the stamp paper. The land mafia had forged the myadi patta land and forced the poor worker to give his signature," ATTSA leader Kurmi alleged.
