Assam: Flood situation turns critical as nearly 4 lakh affected, 2 killed

Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam has turned critical as 3,81,320 people across the 7 Assam districts of Nalbari, Goalpara, Nagaon, Hojai, West Karbi Anglong, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia have been affected as of Friday. Additionally, 21,807 people have been driven to take shelter across 190 relief camps. Two persons, one from Goalpara and one from Hojai have been killed, .taking the total the death toll upto 5 

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority's (ASDMA) daily report. Goalpara district is the worst affected as 1,96,427 people across 158 villages have been affected by floods. It is followed by Hojai, where 94,445 people across 90 villages have been affected.

The situation has also turned alarming for animals, and two animals have been washed away in Nalbari district in the past 24 hours.

At the same time, 24,755 hectares of crops in 5 districts have been affected. Rescue teams have already been deployed by the Government to rescue the flood-affected people, and so far, 24 boats have deployed and 3,880 persons have been rescued.

Embankments in the districts of Hojai, Barpeta, and Udalguri districts have been affected and landslide has been reported in 3 villages in Dima Hasao district; 2 roads have also been blocked because of the floods.

In Upper Assam's Dibrugarh district, erosion has been reported due to which the Rongmola-Mirigaon LP School and the 1 no. Anganwadi centre have been fully damaged under the Chabua Revenue Circle.

Assam Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna on May 29 reached Hojai where he took stock of the flood situation in the wake of the recent flash floods in the state which have affected almost 3 lakh people and killed 2 persons in Goalpara.

Sanjay Krishna during his visit to the Lower Assam district reviewed the prevalent situation caused by the rising water level of the river Kopili. Additionally, he assessed the damages during his on-site visit. The Chief Secretary also visited a relief camp at the Singari Basti Lower Primary school and interacted with the camp inmates about relief measures.

According to officials, Sanjay Krishna also directed the Deputy Commissioner to keep an eye on uninterrupted supply of essential items such as food, water, and medicines at the relief camps to tide over the crisis. Later in the day, the Chief Secretary chaired a review meeting to this effect with the Hojai district administration.
