Assam floods: 80% area of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary under flood water

MORIGAON: As the second wave of flood-hit the Mayong area, almost 80 percent area of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary has been submerged.

Forest camps like Pagladuba, Nantoli Hahsora, Kukaari, Dholi, Bakuljan, Hadug, Kamarpur, Tuplung and Kusiani have been badly affected. The inundated flood water has also submerged many villages in the greater Mayong area. Animals like cows, wild buffaloes, pigs and one-horned rhinos have moved towards high lands in the sanctuary. Animals are facing acute food scarcity in the sanctuary due to the flood.

On the other hand, a few riverine villages under the Bhuragaon revenue circle have been submerged. As villages like Bardubatup, Rathkhula, Sunduba, Lengeri, Ambagan, Baralimari, Betoni, Batalimari, Falihamari, Dungapar, Niz-Chahoria and Buwalguri have been hit by the flood, jute, bau paddy and sugarcane fields have been submerged by the flood. People along with domestic animals have been forced to take shelter on high lands.
