Assam Floods Continue to Wreck Havoc as Water Level Continues to Increase

GUWAHATI: The flood situation in the state of Assam remains to be very grim and the number of people affected by the increasing water levels continues to increase. As per the reports from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, nearly 35000 people have been affected by the waters of Brahmaputra and other rivers of the region.

Incessant rains in parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have led to an increase in the water levels of multiple rivers. The Brahmaputra River is flowing above the stipulated danger mark in the Nimati Ghat region in the Jorhat district. Also, the Disang River of Sivsagar district continues to flow over the danger mark, triggering fears of imminent damage.

According to the report, a total of 111 villages spread over 13 revenue circles of the state have been submerged and a huge number of people have been affected. With over 18000 people affected in Lakhimpur District and nearly 16000 in the Dhemaji District, these two are the worst affected districts in this flood. In the Sivasagar district, the flood waters of the Disang River have flooded the low-lying regions of the Disangmukh region and entered several houses leading to the relocation of the people.

The report from ASDMA on Sunday also mentioned that around 8000 people were affected in the Gogamukh while another 7400 were affected in the Sissiborgaon Revenue Circle. A total of 18268 domestic animals including large and small animals and poultry have also been affected.

One embankment, four roads and a small dam have been damaged by the waters. The Silapathar Model Hospital in Dhemaji was also flooded causing problems for the patients and the staff. Official report point to a total of 1479.27 hectares of land under crops being damaged in the state as of now.
