Assam floods: Flood remains grim in Tinsukia district

TINSUKIA: The flood scenario in Tinsukia district is still grim, though water level of all the major rivers in Tinsukia district, except Buri Dihing in Margherita, has been receding with the improvement of weather since Sunday morning.

The deluge in catchment areas and subsequent flooding in plains affected nearly 73,500 population under four revenue circles- Tinsukia (27,568), Margherita (180), Sadiya (1,043) and Doomdooma (44,629) with the damage of 4,879 hectares of crop area. As many as 64 relief camps have been established in Tinsukia and Doomdooma with 19 relief distribution centres at Doomdooma. The erosion has threatened 31 families in Alubari village under Margherita revenue circle.

According to official information, 40 villages have been affected under Tinsukia Revenue Circle while corresponding figures for Doomdooma, Sadiya and Margherita are 83, 6 and 1 respectively.

Several thousand hectares of agricultural land have been submerged. While Doomdooma recorded 2,015 hectares and Margherita 1,431 hectaresTinsukia recorded 308 hectares and 225 hectares in Sadiya. Among the affected families, 6,382 inmates with 1,770 children are lodged in Doomdooma relief camps while 2014 families having 13,307 members, including 4,007 children, have been lodged in Tinsukia relief camps.

Though there was no report of livestock death, as many as 1,05,071 animals have been affected. So far, 1,50,294 quintal of rice, 38,436 quintal of dal, 8,075 quintal of salt and 759 litres of mustard oil, besides wheat bran and tarpaulin, have been distributed among the affected families.
