Assam Floods Situation Grim, Over 85,000 People Affected In 7 Districts

GUWAHATI: Over 85,000 people have been affected in seven districts of the state because of floods in the past 24 hours.

The worst-affected districts include Bongaigaon, Dhemaji, Chirang, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar Biswanath, and Sonitpur, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

Over 52,000 people in 91 villages of two revenue circles have been affected by state floods in Bongaigaon district, while over 16,000 people in 26 villages of three revenue circles have been affected in the Dhemaji district.

In Chirang district, more than 13,000 people in 42 villages of three revenue circles have been affected by floods. Similarly, in Dibrugarh District, over 3500 people in a village under the Chabua revenue circle were affected due to floods.

Floodwaters have deluged more than 5000 hectares of croplands in the above-mentioned districts in the past 24 hours. More than 62,000 animals were also affected in three districts namely Bongaigaon, Chirang, and Dhemaji.

Around 187 people and six animals stranded due to floods have been evacuated by the disaster relief personnel in Bongaigaon, Chirang, and Dhemaji districts respectively.

10 roads in five districts namely Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dhemaji, and Jorhat have been damaged, washed away, or submerged due to flooding. Many districts including Biswanath, Chirang, Dhubri, Goalpara, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, and Sonitpur among others have witnessed massive soil erosion.

The Indian Meteorological Department had on Wednesday predicted heavy rainfall in the Northeast region and eastern India for 24 to 48 hours. As per a media report, Assam received 16 percent below normal monsoon rainfall till July. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said the state experienced 571.9 mm rainfall between June 1 and July 17 this year. The total quantum of rainfall during this period was 16 percent below the normal level. While 13 districts received scanty rainfall, there was normal rainfall in 13 other districts.
