GUWAHATI: A food safety government official from the Nagaon district of Assam has been arrested after he was caught red-handed while taking a bribe.

The officer has been identified as Birinchi Kumar Karzee, a resident of Nagaon working in the food safety department as a designated food safety officer.

Police informed that on Friday 29 April, Karzee was held on graft charges after he was caught red-handed at the time he was accepting a bribe.

According to reports, the official allegedly demanded a huge amount of money to issue an FSSAI (Food Safety and Standard Authority of India) license to the complainant.

On receiving certain inputs about the corruption activity, the Nagaon police team accompanied by a detective of the Vigilance and Anti Corruption wing launched an operation.

The police team along with Vigilance & Anti Corruption wing laid a trap and accordingly Karzee was caught red-handed on Friday afternoon.

The director of Vigilance and Anti Corruption wing and special DGP (Director General of Police), GP Singh said that Karzee was caught while taking a bribe of Rupees 10,000 against 1 lakh demanded to issue the license for a company owned by the complainant.

It may be mentioned that many similar corruption cases came to light after such a trap by the Assam police and Vigilance and Anti-Corruption group.

Earlier in March this year, Assam CID (Crime Investigation Department) nabbed an education department official in Nagaon on charges of corruption.

Sleuths of the Criminal Investigation Department arrested the Assam government official working in the block elementary education office of Batadrava, Nagaon.

After receiving important information police along with the investigation department detained the officer from his residence which falls under the Dhing Police Station in Nagaon.
