Assam forest cover, tiger population increased: Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal

Guwahati: The Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal said that the forest cover of Assam has been increased by 222 square km. He further shared a good news that, under the BJP-led government of the state, the rhino poaching has stopped.

The data on the green cover is based on a report of the Forest Survey of India.

CM Sonowal said that over the last four and a half year, the Assam state government planted 8.5 crore trees. The government have planted indigenous fruit, flowering, and medicinal plants at 24 locations.

The Assam government is focused on strengthening the biodiversity of the state, said CM Sonowal. He added that the importance of indigenous plants and herbs has increased in this era of science and technology.

With the forest cover, the tiger population of Manas National Park has increased. A study, which was carried out in 2019, said that the park has an estimated tiger population of 52. However, in the year 2010, the park had only 15-16 tigers. CM insisted that there should be a balance between economy and ecology.

He said that today the challenge before humanity is global warming. One cannot grow their economy at the cost of the ecology. Therefore, one needs to develop a compromising standpoint between the two.

He also said that there is also a need for conserving forest and the environment. People should be made aware of the importance of forest and environment. Everyone should make sure that the forests survive so that there is sufficient oxygen.

Sonowal said that if only there are trees, there will be human beings. The pandemic has taught us how important oxygen is. He further added that along with plants and trees, insects, birds, and animals also have to survive. All the creatures of the almighty are the promoters of biodiversity. However, the biggest degrader of all is human beings.
