Assam Forest Department Recovers Injured Rare Asiatic Black Bear

Guwahati: The Forest Department has recovered an injured Asiatic Black bear in Chirang district's Bijni town along the Assam-Bhutan border.

The bear's head was severely injured and it was found near Lakhijhar.

According to the preliminary investigation carried out by the Forest Department, it was suspected that someone might have attacked the Asiatic black bear with a sharp weapon as a result of which he got severely injured.

The Forest Department tried its best to save the bear by providing him proper treatment but unfortunately, it succumbed to its injuries.

The Department is trying to find out the exact reason behind Bear's injuries that ultimately led to his death.

Meanwhile, several people were reportedly injured in Bear attacks over the past few days in this area as a result of which there is widespread concern among the locals.

A man got severely injured in a Bear attack in Mushalpur in Baksa district in December.

The injured person belonged to Pub-Banglabari village in Mushalpur and he was identified as Sonaram Brahma.

A wild bear who had ventured into the village from the forest area in search of food attacked him and he was lucky to have survived this attack.

Prior to this incident, another Bear attack occurred in Chirang district in November where six people were injured.

This particular incident unravelled when all of the six injured persons went to a bamboo garden to gather some canes and a Bear hiding in the bamboo forest attacked them.

It is to be noted that the Asiatic Black Bear is said to be a vulnerable species and are rarely seen.

These medium-sized bear species are native to Asia and they have largely adopted an arboreal lifestyle.

They live in the Himalayas, southeastern Iran, the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent, the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China, the Russian Far East, the islands of Honshū and Shikoku in Japan, and Taiwan.

It is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and is threatened by deforestation and poaching for its body parts, which are used in traditional medicine.
