DIBRUGARH: Former AASU general secretary Shankar Jyoti Baruah was arrested on Monday in connection with a case registered at Duliajan Police Station for allegedly assaulting a petrol pump worker in Duliajan.
After the incident, he was picked up by police for interrogation and subsequently taken into custody.
The case has been registered as Duliajan PS Case No. 90/2025 under the following sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023:
196(1)(a), 196(1)(b), 197(1)(b), 197(1)(c), 197(1)(d), 3(5), 352, 353(1)(b), 353(1)(c), and 353(2).
Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police, Rakesh Reddy, said, “A confrontation arose between two parties at the petrol pump in Duliajan. Shankar Jyoti Baruah suddenly appeared on the scene and physically assaulted a worker at the petrol pump. We arrested him today and produced him before the court.”
After his arrest, he was taken in handcuffs by Dibrugarh Police, which led to reactions in different circles. In the evening today, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma instructed the police not to handcuff Baruah.
Last year, Shankar Jyoti Baruah had resigned as the General Secretary of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) amid controversies surrounding his personal life. At that time, Baruah cited a dispute involving his relationship with a female law student as the catalyst for his decision to resign.
