DHUBRI: Former Chairman of Dhubri Municipal Board, Kalyan Purkayastha, breathed his last at B.Barooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati this morning. He was 68. He originally hailed from Silchar (Udarband) and was born in 1957. He was the son of late Kamini Purkayastha. From a very young age, he was actively involved in politics and public life. He was a Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangha (RSS) activist and was even jailed for 18 months during the Emergency in 1975 for being a fierce activist of the Sangha. At the age of 19, he was sent to Dhubri as a pracharak of RSS, where he continued to serve the people with dedication. In 1997, he became the chairman of the Dhubri Municipal Board. He also served as the District Coordinator of the Hindu Jagaran Mancha and Assam State BJP secretary. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a host of well-wishers. His contribution to society especially in Dhubri, will always be remembered by those who knew and worked with him.
