Assam: Gargaon College celebrates National Science Day

SIVASAGAR: The 39th National Science Day was celebrated at Gargaon College by the Gargaon College Science Forum (GCSF) on Friday. The programme commenced with Dr Chandraditya Gogoi, President of the Gargaon College Science Forum, hoisting the forum flag and paying tributes to CV Raman. In his address, Dr Gogoi emphasized the significance of the Raman Effect and its importance in Physics. He enumerated how National Science Day has been celebrated since 1986 to promote scientific thinking and ideas among the public.

Dr Dilip Kumar Deka, Head of Geography Department, explained the significance of National Science Day highlighting the contributions of Aryabhata, Varahmihira, and ISRO’s Chandrayaan mission, emphasizing science as cause-and-effect analysis. Dr Deka also recognized Birubala Rabha’s efforts against witch-hunting, encouraging students to pursue innovation and scientific excellence.

A formal meeting was held in the afternoon marking the gracious presence of Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, noted academician and Principal of Gargaon College, Diganta Konwar, Vice-Principal of Gargaon College, Dr Saumar Jyoti Mahanta, Principal of Sibsagar Commerce College, Dr Pankaj Pratim Hazarika, Assistant Professor of Sibsagar Commerce College, and Dr Chandraditya Gogoi, President of GCSF. The meeting was inaugurated by Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta who expressed his gratitude towards GCSF for organizing programmes that promote scientific thinking among students and the public.  He emphasized the importance of critical thinking, innovative thinking and social equality for achieving Viksit Bharat education. Dr Mahanta further explained how social justice is essential for Viksit Bharat.

Resource Person Dr Saumar Jyoti Mahanta delivered the keynote speech on the focal theme, highlighting the need for a scientific mind to drive innovation, rather than just a science background. He also discussed the significance of scientific thinking in today’s world, particularly in the context of AI and data science.

A peer-reviewed book ‘Recent Advances in Open Science’, edited by Dr Bornali Dutta, Dr Kabita Phukon, Dr Rituraj Neog, Dr Rashmi Dutta, and Dr Saheen Shehnaz Begum, Assistant Professors of Gargaon College, was also released during the programme. The book is a treasure trove of knowledge, featuring a total of 40 research papers that span diverse fields.
