SIVASAGAR: The Annual College Week of Gargaon College concluded on Saturday amidst great fanfare and enthusiasm. The closing ceremony and prize distribution commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp by Biman Chandra Baruah, President of the governing body, accompanied by other distinguished guests.

Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Principal of Gargaon College, inaugurated the programme and delivered the welcome address. Dr Mahanta expressed his satisfaction with the students’ active participation and enthusiasm during the college week. While tracing the college’s illustrious history, he informed the gathering that the institution has met all the necessary criteria for autonomy and expressed optimism that it will eventually evolve into a university. Dr Mahanta also urged students to cultivate essential human values, maintain punctuality, prioritize mental well-being, and take proactive steps to overcome challenges.

The programme was graced by Padma Shri Rebakanta Mahanta, Xatradhikar of Khatpar Xatra, a celebrated Xattriya artist and expert traditional mask maker and Dr Anil Saikia, retired Principal of Moran College, a renowned exponent of folk culture and an eminent litterateur. On this occasion, renowned Xattriya artist Rebakanta Mahanta was felicitated and congratulated by the college fraternity for being honoured recently with the Padma Shri. In his address, Padma Shri Mahanta recalled his formative years spent in Khatpar Xatra. Drawing from the rich cultural legacy of Srimanta Sankaradev and Madhavdev, he emphasized the significance of living a life guided by compassion, truth, and forgiveness.

Chief guest Dr Anil Saikia delivered a lecture and explored the complexities of scientific innovation and its role in shaping human history, language and societal structures. Dr Saikia further emphasized the importance of balancing the four essential aspects of life: Head (intellect), Heart (emotions), Hand (action), and Health (well-being). He encouraged the students to utilize their leisure time wisely and prioritize their responsibilities. He also stressed the significance of fulfilling one’s duties towards one’s neighbours, society, and the nation. Furthermore, he highlighted the need for informed decision-making, emphasizing that exercising one’s rights requires being well-informed.
