TINSUKIA: A gas leak from an Oil India Limited (OIL) pipeline near Makum in Assam’s Tinsukia district has triggered widespread alarm, with the leakage reportedly continuing unchecked for the past three days. The pipeline, located along the vital Makum-Barekuri road, has become the centre of controversy amid growing concerns over public safety and environmental impact.
Local residents have reported a strong odour of gas lingering in the air, heightening fears of a potential disaster. Despite repeated appeals for intervention, there has been no visible containment effort or official advisory issued by OIL. The silence from the state-owned enterprise has further intensified public frustration and anxiety.
The Makum Regional Students’ Union has strongly condemned what it described as OIL’s “reckless and irresponsible” inaction. In a press statement, the Union demanded immediate steps to halt the leakage and implement long-term safeguards to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“The continuous emission of gas not only endangers the environment but also puts human lives at risk. Oil India Limited must act responsibly and transparently,” a Union spokesperson said.
However, neither OIL nor district authorities have issued a formal explanation or timeline for repairs, deepening the uncertainty and adding fuel to public outrage. Local administration has yet to respond publicly, and there is growing concern that delay in action could lead to irreversible consequences.
