Karimganj: A girl in Assam's Karimganj district has brought laurels to the state. Pollabi Debroy, a teacher by profession, has entered the International Book of Records. She achieved this feat by constructing the largest Durga idol made out of recyclable waste products. Pollabi had made the six feet Durga idol out of waste materials in 2019.

She has been described as an "enthusiastic girl, artiste" and is a teacher of a private school.

To build the six-feet structure of Goddess Durga, the girl has used plastic packets, spoons, aluminium sheets and a clay model.

As per a local source, Pollabi has asserted that she wishes to make good use of waste materials. Such waste materials which are re-usable are often not acknowledged and ignored by the general public. She believes that waste materials should be utilized after re-cycling and may later be used for employment generation.

"It is a new world record made by me", Pollabi said, expressing her happiness.

On Wednesday, she was congratulated by the Deputy Commissioner of Karamganj district, Khargeswar Pegu, who also handed over the certificate and medal to her.

The Secretary of Press Club, Arup Roy, expressed that this was a moment of great pride for the district.

Karimganj was recently in the news after drugs worth Rs 2 crore was seized by Karimganj police on a specific tip-off from its own source.

The anti-drug wing of Karimganj police laid a trap at Deubari village under Patharkandi block and arrested two smugglers with 40,000 yaba tablets. The smugglers were identified as Islam Uddin and Shabbir Ahmed of Deubari village. The market value of the yaba tablets or drugs is around Rs 2 crore, as pointed out by Monirul Islam, in charge of the Karimganj police anti-drugs branch. Patharkandi police assisted the Karimganj police in its operation at the Deubai village.
