Guwahati: A team from the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti–Corruption, Assam has apprehended a person going by the name of Hemanta Kumar Talukder, the General Manager of District Industries and Commerce Centre, Darrang, on charges of demanding a bride on May 24.

The directorate received a complaint where it was stated that Hemanta had demanded a sum of Rs 15000 as a bribe from the complainant for authorizing a loan to the complainant under the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) scheme.

The complainant was not willing to pay the bribe and he then decided to approach the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti–Corruption, Assam in the hope that necessary legal action will be taken against Hemanta Kumar Talukder.

Thereafter, a trap was set up by a team at Mangaldai near his office and Talukder fell prey to it. He was caught red-handed immediately after accepting a bribe of Rs10,000 from the complainant at 2.45 pm.

The bribe money was seized from the possession of the civil servant in the presence of independent witnesses.

A case against Talukder has been registered in the ACB police station on May 24 vide ACB P.S case no – 12/2022 u/s 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988( as amended in 2018).

Necessary legal follow up actions are underway.

Meanwhile, in yet another case of bribery, Assam Police Vigilance and Anti Corruption sleuths on May 20 apprehended an executive engineer (Irrigation) of Dudhnoi East Division, Goalpara, and ahead assistant for taking a bribe of Rs 50,000.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, Assam Special DGP Law and Order GP Singh apprised the same.

"Akbar Ali, Executive Engineer (Irrigation)Dudhnoi East Division, Goalpara & co-accd Sri Jagadish Rabha, Head Assistant, both apprehended red-handed in a trap by @DIR_VAC_ASSAM while accepting INR 50,000 for flood damage renovation," Singh tweeted.
