Assam: Goalpara 'Imam' Detained Over Alleged Association With Ansarullah Bangla Team

GUWAHATI: The Goalpara police on Saturday detained three people including an 'Imam' of a mosque for suspected links with the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).

Notably, the ABT is a terror organization in Bangladesh which is a part of the Al-Qaeda network.

The detainees were identified as Abdus Subahan of Dakaidal and Jalal Uddin of the Matia area.

The police have even detained Subahan's nephew and his elder for questioning. Meanwhile, a person hailing from Goalpara's Matia area has been apprehended today morning by the cops on suspicion of having links with Jihadi groups. The person hailing from the Matia region has been identified as Jalal Uddin.

It is learned that Abdus Subahan is the 'Imam' of Tinkoniapara Mosque and a teacher at Tinkoniapara Madrassa.

The police arrested Jalal Uddin on Saturday morning while Abdus Sobahan was arrested after a prayer in the mosque on Friday night.

Both of them are currently being interrogated by the Goalpara police. On the other hand, the family members of Abdus Subahan demanded strict action against him, if found guilty and if not asked for immediate release.

In the last five months, five modules of a terrorist organization named Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), have been busted by the state police with the help of other investigative agencies, said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

''So far 29 ABT leaders or cadres have been arrested,'' he said while addressing a press conference at Janata Bhawan. He further said that the police busted sleeper cells in Barpeta, Bongaigaon, and Morigaon and also recovered incriminating jihadi literature used for indoctrinating and radicalizing gullible youth to join the outfit.

''We also recovered high-end electronic devices used by these jihadis for communication,'' he added.
