GUWAHATI: The Assam government has announced a full holiday on February 19, 2025, in Tinsukia and ten other districts for the Ali-Aye-Ligang festival, an important celebration of the Mising community.

The festival, which marks the start of the sowing season, is observed with traditional dances, songs, and feasts, reflecting the region’s rich heritage.

Apart from Tinsukia, the districts where a holiday has been declared include Dhemaji, North Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Majuli, Charaideo, and Biswanath.

The decision has been well received by the Mising community, as it acknowledges their traditions and allows them to fully participate in the celebrations.

In the rest of Assam, Ali-Aye-Ligang will be a restricted holiday, giving government employees the choice to take leave and join the festivities. Meanwhile, preparations for the festival are in full swing, especially in Tinsukia, where locals are eager to celebrate with enthusiasm.

The event highlights Assam’s cultural diversity and strengthens community bonds through shared traditions and joyous gatherings.

Meanwhile, the 2nd Simolu Festival began on February 15 at BWISANG-NA, an eco-resort in Barunguri, Laokhowa, celebrating the blooming Bombax ceiba flowers. The two-day event featured a scenic cyclothon through wetlands and grasslands, offering participants a unique nature experience.

Day one included camping, ethnic cuisine, and cultural performances, while the second day saw cyclists riding along Donduwa Beel, followed by a debrief on ecological conservation.

Local students joined a nature walk, receiving certificates to encourage environmental awareness. Dr. Sonali Ghosh emphasized the festival’s role in promoting community, culture, and ecological preservation.
