GUWAHATI: The Assam government has declared that single fathers working in state government departments will now be entitled to Child Care Leave (CCL). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this through a post on the social media site X, stressing the need to support single fathers in their caregiving role.

“Sometimes life may take unexpected turns, and a man may have to be the sole caregiver for a child. If such a scenario ever arises for our state government employees, we've got you covered,” CM Sarma stated. He further clarified that the new policy would allow single fathers to take time off to care for their children without the risk of losing their salary or job security.

Previously, CCL was primarily available to female government employees for various reasons, including a child's illness or educational needs. Under the new directive, single fathers including widowers, divorcees, and unmarried fathers will be eligible for this leave. The policy applies to children up to 18 years of age and covers biological, adopted, or legally dependent children.

Single fathers who are eligible can now avail up to two years (730 days) of CCL, which can be availed in several phases but not more than three times within a calendar year. The new policy also covers government employees with custody of disabled children, further promoting support for varied family structures in the state.
