Guwahati: For unhindered movement of Indian Army towards India and China border, the government of India has planned to construct a tunnel under the Brahmaputra River in Assam.

On this matter, the chief minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma held a meeting on Sunday with the senior officials of the Border Roads Organization (BRO).

The Assam chief minister said that the proposed Brahmaputra tunnel has the potential to transform the entire communication scenario of Assam.

Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, "Glad to attend a presentation by Shri PKH Singh, Addl DG of @BROindia on the proposed Brahmaputra Tunnel. The 6550-cr tunnel endorsed by State Govt will connect Jamugurihat (north) & Silghat (south) and has the potential to transform entire communication scenario of Assam."Earlier, the Chief Minister had said in the Assam assembly that China has five different roads to move towards the international border of Arunachal Pradesh, but India has only one road via Bomdila.

The proposed tunnel would be located upstream of the Brahmaputra River from Jamugurihat on the northern bank, connecting to Silghat on the southern bank of the river.

The cost of the tunnel is estimated at around Rs 6,550 crore and the project has been endorsed by the Assam government.
