Assam Government Trying To Restore Reading Habit Among The Youth

GUWAHATI : As the ratio of book readers is gradually declining in the State, Ranoj Pegu, the Assam education minister has decided for a solution to this. On 7th of December, Wednesday, Pegu stated that government is looking to design a productive environment for school going children as well as others to adopt the habit of reading.

The minister expressed his concern after evaluating the fewer sale of books in Assam. He further said that, to become a good writer one must be a reader first. If the input is not sturdy enough then the output will automatically be weak.

Pegu emphasised on reading habit and spoke about the education scheme 'Padhe Bharat Badhe Bharat' that was executed under the patronage of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan in 2014. Several book fairs are conducted in the state by Publication Board Assam, every year to promote varied books and the importance to read them. Apart from that, local organisations in the state also conducts book exhibitions for the people of different age groups.

However, the government is now planning to design and create an atmosphere of reading right from the grassroots level. Assam government has implemented the 'Padhe Bharat Badhe Bharat' in both central and state level schools, and it will continue this way in future as well, stated the education minister.

Pegu appealed to retired persons and  literature experts to cooperate with the government in order to instill the habit of reading among youngsters in the state.

Education minister Ranoj Pegu claims that people need to stop advising the teenagers all the time, and start listening to their point of views. The youths needs to be heard and not advised always. This is how thoughts could be exchanged among people of different age groups. Only by listening to the youngsters, their mindset, interest and objectives could be understood. This will eventually help in the process of connecting with them better and guide them in the right direction.
