KOKRAJHAR: The Governor of Assam has officially approved the nominations of Sajal Kumar Singha and Saikong Basumatary as Executive Members of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Executive Council. This decision follows a recommendation from Pramod Boro, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of BTC.
Sajal Kumar Singha, who represents the Shrirampur constituency, had initially been elected as a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) during the 2020 BTC elections. However, in a change of political direction, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) before the current BTC government was formed.
Saikong Basumatary, elected from the Chirang constituency, was originally a member of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) but later joined the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), aligning with the current BTC administration.
The inclusion of Singha and Basumatary is expected to enhance the governance framework of the BTC and strengthen the leadership under the present administration.
What is Bodoland Territorial Council ?
The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) is an autonomous body established under the 6th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, following the Memorandum of Settlement between the Bodoland Liberation Tiger Force (BLTF), the Government of India, and the Government of Assam.
The BTC comprises 40 elected members, along with six additional members appointed by the Governor of Assam. The jurisdiction of the BTC is officially known as the Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD).
This region is among the least developed areas in India, with the local economy primarily reliant on agriculture. Industrialization and other employment opportunities are limited in the region.
