Assam: Governor Gulab Chand Kataria visits banana plantation in Goalpara

GUWAHATI: In an attempt to gain an insight of the banana cultivation, understand the challenges and opportunities faced by farmers, and explore ways in which the government can provide further assistance to this vital sector, Governor Gulab Chand Kataria visited a banana plantation in Madang Bakharapara, located along the Assam-Meghalaya border in Goalpara district, on Tuesday.

During his visit, Governor Kataria met an ideal farmer Debabrata Rabha, who manages a sprawling 300 bigha banana plantation orchard. The Governor expressing his admiration for the farmer and others associated with the plantation, he said that it is because of their hard labour, the district witnessed phenomenal growth in banana cultivation. Their commitment also motivated others to take banana plantation and cultivation to a greater height. He also said that their enthusiasm and hard work truly inspired others and contributed to the growth and success of the horticulture sector in the region. The Governor said that the government is taking initiatives to provide support to the farmers’ community so that they can thrive in this sector.

Prior to visiting the banana plantation, the Governor also visited Asia’s largest banana market located in Daranggiri in Goalpara district. He also held discussions with some vendors about the facilities and support they receive from the district administration, as well as matters related to banana exports. However, due to the market’s bi-weekly schedule, the number of vendors present at the time of the visit was limited. The DC, SP and other officials from the district also joined the Governor during his visit, stated a press release.
