NAGAON: Professor Jagdish Mukhi, Governor of Assam, on Wednesday visited the historic Nowgong College (autonomous) for the first time after the institution has been scheduled to be promoted to a state university by the State Government.

During his trip to the institution, the Governor participated in an interactive programme with the teaching staff as well as the students of the college. Dr Sarat Borkatoki, Principal of the college, delivered the welcome address while Dr Bhuban Chandra Chutia, coordinator of Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), anchored the interactive programme.

Professor Mukhi presented the Dulal Chandra Goswami Memorial Research Award 2021, facilitated by the Dulal Chandra Goswami Memorial Trust, to noted research scholar and assistant professor, Department of Chemistry, Dr Parikshit Gogoi. Significantly, the award carries a cheque of Rs 30,000, appraisal letter, memento and others. The award is offered to a noted research scholar every year to encourage the research fellows of the district as well as the State by the noted physician of the small town and donator of the Trust, Dr Mukut Goswami.

Besides, the Governor also ceremonially released a book written in Hindi language titled Hindi Ki Noye Kahaniu Mye Nari Ka Monubishleshan by Karobi Devi, Department of Hindi, Nowgong College.

While addressing the interactive programme, Prof Mukhi said, "Only scholars and academicians can build a university." He urged the Principal of the college as well as other teaching staff to prepare the new text books as per guidelines of the new education policy 2020 as early as possible.

Referring to the top priority of a university, Prof Mukhi said that teaching and research work were quite reciprocal and hence he urged the teaching staff to maintain the balance between teaching and research work.

While interacting with the students, he urged the students to follow strict disciplines as well as other moral values of a good student so that they could carry on the merits of the institution where they studied.

During the visit, the Governor was accompanied by Swapnali Dutta, Secretary to the Governor of Assam, Deputy Commissioner of Nagaon, Nisarg Hivare, and Superintendent of Police of Nagaon.
