Guwahati: Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that a COVID-19 patient in Assam may undergo home isolation, considering he/she signs an agreement agreeing to the following conditions:

  • Firstly, neighbors must not oppose their stay at their flat/residence
  • He/she can stay at home if he/she does not have aged parents or other co-morbid patients
  • They have to purchase a pulse oximeter
  • They should have a private doctor with whom they must share their pulse oximeter rate every 3 hours
  • If the pulse oximeter rate dips to below 95, they should go to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital in a private vehicle and have a driver available for 24 hours

"They must sign an agreement agreeing to all the terms, then we do not object to the patient staying at home. We respect their choice to stay at home, but it is illegal to transmit the virus to others", Sarma said, weighing in on the matter.

Sarma also announced that the air passengers who belong to Guwahati will be subjected to rapid antigen tests. Upon testing positive, the person will be taken to the hospital. However, if he/she tests negative, the person will be sent for quarantine at his/her own residence instead.

In the midst of the debate over who can go for home quarantine and who cannot, the rising number of COVID-19 cases and deaths -- especially in locked down Guwahati -- has given rise to concerns among Assam citizens. The rate of the detections has also clambered upwards, and the total number of cases has surged beyond 15,000. As on Friday night, with the detection of 936 more COVID-19 cases, the tally rose to 15,536. In a positive sign, however, as many as 701 persons were released from hospitals across the state.
