
Guwahati: The Assam government announced on Monday that instead of September 14 (Wednesday), the holiday on account of "Tithi of Sri Madhavdev" will be given on September 15 (Thursday).
As per the reports, this was informed in a corrigendum issued on Monday.
This holiday commemorates the death anniversary of an important 16th-century Assamese saint-reformer.
Madhavdev, an important preceptor of the Ekasarana Dharma also known as the loyal disciple of, Srimanta Sankardev as well for his artistic brilliance. Initially, he was a sakta worshipper and later converted to Ekasarana Dharma by Sankardev and became his most prominent disciple. Moreover, he became the religious as well as artistic successor of Sankardeva after the latter's death in 1568.
Notably, Madhabadeva made a significant contribution to the development of his Guru Sankaradeva's legacy to enlighten the people. There is also a graceful flow in Madhabadeva's style which is as expressive and captivating as that of his master.
Madhabadeva's contributions to modern dramas are also significant works for the Assamese literature of that period. He is known particularly for his book of hymns, the 'Naam Ghosha'and the Bhakti Ratnawali. The vaishnavite saint also scribed more than 150 Borgeets. He made a huge contribution to Assamese literature. Also, his works exhibit his versatility, sincerity and depth of thought.
Additionally, he established seven satras (monasteries) that have served as the foundation for moderate thoughts and beliefs for centuries. The famous Assamese Dhekiakhowa Bornamghor was established around in 1528. Also, he took to the propagation of the bhaktic tenets and doctrines not only through kavyas and songs but also through dramatic presentation. His most celebrated dramas are Arjjuna Bhanjana (Dadhi Mathana), Coradhara, Pimpara Gucova, Bhumi Letova, Bhojana Bihara.
