GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Tezpur on Tuesday distributed sanction letters of Rs 25,000 as one-time assistance to 11,896 widows across the state.

A function to distribute the sanction letters was organised at Tezpur in Assam's Sonitpur district.

The sanction letters were distributed under the Indira Miri Universal Widow Pension 2021-22. According to the scheme, all woman beneficiaries aged 18 to 45 years, whose husbands expired on or after April 1, 2019 received the one-time assistance.

The one- time assistance is in addition to the Rs 330 monthly pension disbursed under the scheme.

The state government launched the Indira Miri Universal Widow Pension in 2020, under which scheme, Rs 330 per month was provided to 2 lakh women.

During the event at Tezpur on Tuesday, the Assam chief minister also handed over cheques of Rs 1 lakh to 308 families who lost their homes to floods this year.

Addressing the gathering, CM Sarma said that beneficiaries of the Orunodoi scheme will also get the assistance within 3 to 6 months from now.

He said, "Six lakh new beneficiaries will be covered under Orunodoi scheme and ration cards will be issued to 10 lakh new families. Ration card holders will get medical insurance up to Rs 5 lakhs per year."

The Orunodoi Scheme, launched on 1 December 2020 through the Government of Assam, will provide financial assistance to 17 lakh families in the state. According to Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma, Rs. 830 will be distributed to 17 lakh families every month so that they can buy food basics.

The main objective of starting this scheme is to provide financial assistance to those people who need to buy things like food and medicine etc. This scheme will help poor families of Assam to live their lives easily.

Under the Orunodoi Scheme launched by the Assam government, financial assistance of Rs 830 will be given to the citizens of the state.

Under this scheme, the government will provide free sterile napkins to young women and also to government and government aided schools from Class VI to XII.

Rs 2800 crore has been provided for the Assam Orunodoi Scheme under which Rs 10,000 will be given as assistance to 27 lakh poor families.
