Assam Govt Ignoring Gauhati High Court's Order: Cong Leader Debabrata Saikia

Biswanath: Assam Congress MLA Debabrata Saikia has alleged that the state government has carried out eviction drive ignoring the order of Gauhati High Court served in the regard. Saikia, accompanied by Barpeta Congress MP Abdul Khaleque visited the Kuhumia area of Biswanath district on Monday, June 7 and took stock of the river erosion in the area. While interacting with media the Opposition leader said that the government should not carry out any eviction drive since the state is under the grip of COVID-19 Pandemic. He expressed dissatisfaction over the eviction carried out by the administration in Hojai and said that the government should not compel the people to starve and die. Saikia also alleged that the state government kept aside the Gauhati High Court order while carrying out eviction. He further said the government must protect lives of the people.

The Opposition leader also assured the Kuhumia area people, who have lost their properties due to the erosion, that he would bring the matter to the notice of the government for easing their plight. He urged the state govt to fulfill the election promise made by the BJP in their Vision Document. He said that the BJP had also made promise of construction of the broken embarkments of the river Brahmaputra and its tributaries.

MP Khaleque, on the other hand, demanded the government to carry out a proper survey of the people who have been rendered homeless by the river erosion. He said that every erosion paves the way for new encroachment and urged the government to issuse migration certificates to those people who become homeless due to river erosion and take adequate step for their rehabilitation . Khaleque alleged that the state Water Resources Department does not work in a timely manner and as such, misappropriation of the fund is rampant. He insisted timely preparation of schemes and hoped that the new State Water Resources minister would pay attention to it.
