Guwahati: Amid the communal tensions in some states, Assam Chief Himanata Biswa Sarma has asserted that the state government is keeping a close watch on the law and order situation in the state.

He said that strict vigil is maintained to ensure communal harmony in the state.

''Apart from ensuring communal harmony is maintained, we are also keeping a watch on law and order situation in the state,'' he said while interacting with media persons on Saturday.

Further, when media persons asked about the comments made by ex-BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal that triggered uproar in some states, Sarma said, '' The Government of India has already reacted to it and the same is in the public domain. After that, I don't think that a state government has anything new to add''.

Meanwhile, in Prayagraj around 227 people were arrested from various districts of Uttar Pradesh in relation to Friday's violence.

Out of these, 68 have been arrested from Prayagraj, 50 from Hathras, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Prashant Kumar, informed in a statement on Saturday.

The statement, as reported by PTI, said that among the rest, 48 people were arrested in Saharanpur, 28 from Ambedkarnagar, 25 in Moradabad and eight in Firozabad.

At least 4 cities in the country were seen with such violent protests during the rallies that were taken out as a protest against the suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma's remarks on Prophet Mohammad.

The BJP spokesperson gave certain comments against the Prophet Mohammad during a TV debate. The Islamic nations criticized her remarks and she was later on suspended by the BJP party.
