PRAYAGRAJ: Amid the tragic loss, the Assam government extended its heartfelt condolences and pledged full support to the victim's family. The state government remains in constant communication with the Maha Kumbh authorities to facilitate the return of the mortal remains.
Niti Ranjan Pal, a well-known businessman from Hailakandi and owner of the popular sweet shop "Om Sweets," sadly lost his life in the Maha Kumbh Mela incident in Prayagraj.
The 63-year-old had traveled there to take part in the holy bathing ritual at the Triveni Sangam ghat. He was one of 30 people who died in the tragic event, while nearly 60 others were injured and quickly taken to the hospital for treatment.
The Maha Kumbh stampede occurred between 1 and 2 AM on Wednesday when a large crowd attempted to climb over the barricades, causing people to fall on each other at Akhara Marg.
Niti Ranjan Pal sustained severe injuries during the stampede and was immediately rushed to the hospital, but he later succumbed to his wounds. His tragic passing has left his family, as well as the business community in Hailakandi, deeply heartbroken.
As per report, the family had been staying in the Madhwapur area. Nitiranjan’s wife, Gayatri, told the police that they had arrived early at the ghat to avoid the large crowd, but the stampede broke out around 2:30 am.
She said that although they screamed for help, there was no police presence at the scene. After hours of searching, they found Nitiranjan and rushed him to a hospital, but he passed away while receiving treatment.
Leena Doley, the superintendent of police in Hailakandi, confirmed the death after receiving information from Uttar Pradesh police. The body will be airlifted from Allahabad to Silchar and is expected to reach Hailakandi by road from Kumbhirgram Airport, either on Wednesday or Thursday.
