GUWAHATI: In a recent announcement by the Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, he informed that the state government will soon approach the apex court of India seeking re-verification of the NRC (National Register of Citizens) list.
On Thursday 24 March, Bora informed about the recent update on the very controversial Assam's NRC list for registering genuine Indian citizens.
The Minister while addressing the media stated that the NRC list that was published three years ago in 2019 is unacceptable by the state government therefore it has taken a major decision to move to the Supreme Court with the plea to re-verify the previously published NRC list.
The particular decision over the NRC list in Assam re-verification has been taken after discussions with the AASU (All Assam Students Union) on the implementation of clause six of the Assam Accord.
On Thursday an important meeting was scheduled between the AASU leadership and state government regarding the implementation of the Assam Accord.
Samujjal Bhattacharya, AASU Advisor on speaking over the matter said that the names of several illegal Bangladeshi people were added to the list issued earlier and therefore it is important to publish a new list.
The Advisor of AASU further asked the central and state governments to move to the apex court for correction and re-verification of the NRC list.
He also remarked that to obtain the re-verification the students' organization has already filed a petition with the Supreme Court of India. An illegal Bangladeshi free NRC list is all the state wishes for said the AASU leader.
The following decision by the Assam government is also taken after discussions with other indigenous organizations apart from AASU.
It may be mentioned that in 2020 Hitesh Dev the NRC state coordinator of Assam had presented an affidavit in front of the Gauhati HC showing the names of 4795 non-eligible people in the NRC list.
