GUWAHATI: In a step towards meeting the demands of the tribal community, the Assam government will be introducing four tribal languages as a medium of teaching from in the lower primary schools in the state.

The four tribal languages that will be used as a medium of teaching are Mising, Tiwa, Deori and Rabha which will be applied in LP school from class 1 to class 5.

On Friday 11 February, the Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu informed that the state government has taken a decision about introducing at least 4 tribal languages as a medium of teaching.

The initiative is taken with the aim of fulfilling the demands of tribal communities as the tribal people from Mising, Rabha, Deori and Tiwa earlier demanded to provide these 4 languages as a medium of education at the lower primary.

The education minister stated that the introduction of tribal languages in schools from the lower primary is a decision meant to meet the demands of tribal communities.

Pegu further informed that textbooks will be made in a way that students might opt to study and learn English or Assamese while teaching Rabha languages. He added that the module will be multilingual.

He also said that the state government is making attempt to bring this new development as soon as possible as efforts are made to introduce the tribal languages within the current year itself.

But the decision is completely based upon some of the technical matters that include textbook preparation added Pegu.

In the process of preparation of textbooks, the schools and instructors with proficiency in the four tribal languages will be selected otherwise the introduction of these languages will be done next year.

On Monday 7 February the state government made an announcement regarding the Garo language and 7 other tribal languages to be taught in schools across the states.

The government informed that eight tribal languages will be part of the curriculum in various schools up to higher secondary level.

There will be an option to study any tribal language from classes 6-8 as optional subjects and from 9-12 as elective subjects.

Pegu took to Twitter to inform that the aforementioned four tribal languages will be introduced in LP schools with a multilingual teacher-education so that it helps in improving Assamese and English proficiency also.
