Assam: GP Singh to Replace Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta as DGP

GUWAHATI : IPS officer, Gyanendra Pratap Singh aka GP Singh has been selected as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam.

GP Singh will grab on the position after current DGP, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta completes his tenure. Mahanta is retiring on the 31st of January, 2023. As per sources, the declaration has been made by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma in an official event.

However, no written notification has been issued as of now regarding the appointment of the new DGP. There are reports that claims that, GP Singh will take charge as the state's new DGP from 1st of February.

The top official of Assam police expressed his gratitude to Himanta Biswa Sarma for expressing faith in him. GP Singh tweeted regarding the same and mentioned Maa Kamakhya's blessing over him which has led him to lead the glorious Assam police.

GP Singh well known for his tremendous work in the past and is also recognised for the same. He has served for a long period of time in the Indian Police Service. The IPS officer belongs to the 1991 batch of Indian Police Service, based on Assam-Meghalaya cadre.

He is the former Inspector General of National Investigation Agency. GP Singh is also the Director of Vigilance and Anti Corruption in Assam. According to reports, GP Singh was sent back to his parent cadre after the scenario of Assam's law and order started to deteriorate.

During his service with the National Investigation Agency, he got engaged on varied military based cases in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and the Northeastern region.

Singh also worked in various cases of NIA in Kashmir that includes terror funding case as well. GP Singh has been a part of several operations against the ULFA.

Following the announcement by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, several dignitaries came forward and wished GP Singh for his new journey.
