Assam: Guwahati Crime Branch ADCP Arrested in Growing APSC Cash-for-Job Scandal

GUWAHATI: In a startling development, the Guwahati Crime Branch's Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Sukanya Das, has been apprehended in connection with the infamous Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) cash-for-job scandal. Reports indicate that this arrest brings the tally of implicated civil servants to four, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing investigation. The previously arrested officials include APS Sajahan Sarkar, APS Aoicharjya Jibon Baruah, and Assistant Employment Officer Rakesh Das.

Sukanya Das was reportedly summoned by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police on December 1 but failed to appear on the stipulated date. The SIT, responsible for probing the APSC scam, has been rigorously pursuing leads to unveil the extent of corruption within the Public Service Commission.

The gravity of the situation is underscored by the fact that the Assam Government has suspended a total of 21 civil servants in connection with the scandal. Among the suspended officers, 11 belong to the Assam Police Service (APS), four are Assam Civil Service (ASC) officers, with one each from the Excise Inspector and ARCS officer ranks, and three Assistant Employment Officers.

Sources reveal that notices have been sent by the SIT to two gazetted officers, namely Assam Police Service (APS) officers Nabanita Sarma and Kalyan Kumar Das. Nabanita Sarma, currently serving as the ASP of Kokrajhar, and ASP Kalyan Kumar Das, who is under suspension, have been summoned to appear before the Crime Investigation Department (CID) on the specified date.

The unfolding scandal has sent shockwaves through the bureaucratic circles in Assam, as the nexus between corruption and public service appointments becomes more apparent. The investigation is likely to delve deeper into the modus operandi of the scam, shedding light on the systemic issues plaguing the state's administrative apparatus.

As the saga continues to unravel, questions regarding the transparency and integrity of the recruitment process within the Assam Public Service Commission come to the forefront. The arrested officials, including the high-ranking ADCP Sukanya Das, now face legal consequences as the investigation progresses, leaving the future of the implicated officers and the tarnished reputation of the APSC hanging in the balance.
