GUWAHATI: The Guwahati City Police have lodged a suo-moto case following disturbances during the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee's "Raj Bhavan Chalo" protest on December 18.

The rally, organized over issues like smart meters installation, the Adani controversy, and the unrest in Manipur, turned out to be a tense face-off with the police.

Reportedly, protesters clashed with the police in an attempt to break through barricades erected to maintain order. This led to heightened tensions in the area, as officers struggled to control the situation. According to Guwahati's Commissioner of Police, Diganta Barah, the case addresses violations of law and order during the demonstration.

Following the rally, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that more stringent measures to regulate protests would be introduced in Guwahati.

CM Sarma confirmed the new development while speaking at a press briefing on December 19 after the weekly Cabinet meeting. Protests near Raj Bhavan would no longer be allowed, as the demonstrators would be instead taken to the designated protest zones to avoid further disruption.

Talking to media persons regarding the December 18 incident, Sarma said that the incident of dismantling of police barricades would be probed in detail. "The city police will initiate a probe into the matter involving protestors who tried to breach security measures," he added.

These new regulations will prevent any such clashes in the future while also letting citizens exercise their right to peaceful demonstration in designated areas.
